My Favourite Spots to Paint en Plein Air in BC

There's something magical about setting up your easel outdoors, feeling the breeze on your face while capturing the ever-changing light of British Columbia's stunning landscapes. As a Vancouver watercolour artist, I've spent countless hours exploring this province with my paint box in tow, and I'm excited to share some of my most beloved plein air painting locations with you.

Over the years, I've discovered that painting outdoors in BC isn't just about finding beautiful scenery—though we certainly have no shortage of that. It's about connecting with the environment, embracing the unpredictability of weather and light, and allowing the landscape to guide your brushstrokes in ways that studio work simply cannot replicate.

Stanley Park Seawall: Urban Beauty at Your Doorstep

Living in Vancouver means having one of the world's most spectacular urban parks right at my fingertips. The Stanley Park Seawall offers an incredible variety of painting opportunities, from the dramatic silhouette of the Lions Gate Bridge to the peaceful lagoons nestled among towering Douglas firs.

My favourite time to paint here is during the golden hour, when the setting sun casts warm light across English Bay. The reflections in the water are constantly shifting, challenging me to work quickly and capture those fleeting moments. I particularly love the view from Third Beach, where you can paint the North Shore mountains while listening to the gentle lapping of waves.

The seawall is also wonderfully accessible—no hiking required! I can easily transport my full watercolour kit and find a comfortable spot to set up. Plus, there's something energizing about painting while joggers and cyclists pass by, often stopping to admire the work in progress.

Queen Elizabeth Park: Elevated Perspectives

For a different urban perspective, Queen Elizabeth Park provides some of the best elevated views of Vancouver's skyline. The Quarry Garden is particularly inspiring with its dramatic changes in elevation and the interplay of cultivated flowers against the city backdrop.

I love coming here in spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The challenge of capturing those delicate pink petals in watercolour while they're dancing in the breeze has taught me so much about loose, expressive brushwork. The conservatory also provides a backup option on those unpredictable Vancouver rainy days.

Deep Cove: Where Mountains Meet Water

A short drive from downtown Vancouver, Deep Cove in North Vancouver offers some of the most picturesque mountain and water combinations I've ever painted. The view across Indian Arm toward the Coast Mountains is simply breathtaking, especially when morning mist clings to the peaks.

What I love about Deep Cove is the intimate scale. Unlike some of BC's more grandiose vistas, this location has a cozy, approachable feeling that translates beautifully to watercolour. The kayakers and paddleboarders add wonderful moving elements to compositions, and the little beach provides easy setup spots.

I often combine painting sessions here with a visit to the famous Deep Cove Donuts—because every plein air artist needs proper fuel!

Lighthouse Park: Wild Beauty in West Vancouver

When I want to feel completely immersed in BC's coastal wilderness without traveling far from the city, Lighthouse Park is my go-to destination. The ancient Douglas fir forest, rugged granite shoreline, and iconic Point Atkinson Lighthouse create an incredibly rich painting environment.

The trails here lead to numerous painting spots, each offering different perspectives and challenges. I'm particularly drawn to the viewpoints where you can capture the lighthouse against the backdrop of Howe Sound and Vancouver Island. The interplay of the weathered granite rocks and the deep blue-green waters provides endless opportunities to explore colour temperature and texture.

Fair warning: the trails can be a bit rough, so I pack light and use a portable watercolour kit when painting here. The extra effort is always worth it for the incredible subjects you'll find.

Jericho Beach: Sky and Sea Symphony

Jericho Beach holds a special place in my heart as one of Vancouver's most painter-friendly locations. The wide, sandy beach provides plenty of space to set up, and the views across English Bay toward Point Grey and beyond are constantly changing with the weather and tides.

I'm endlessly fascinated by the way light behaves differently here throughout the day. Morning light creates soft, cool tones across the water, while afternoon sun brings out the warm ochres and umbers in the sand and driftwood. The beach grass and scattered logs provide wonderful foreground elements that help create depth in compositions.

The sailing activity from Jericho Sailing Centre adds dynamic elements to paintings, and I've learned to work quickly to capture boats as they tack across the bay. It's excellent practice for loosening up your brushwork!

Sharing the Experience Online

Documenting these plein air adventures has become almost as important as the painting itself. I love sharing behind-the-scenes photos and time-lapse videos of my painting process on my website and social media. For managing my online presence and portfolio, I use Hostinger VPS for all my projects (affiliate link) at https://www.hostinger.com?REFERRALCODE=VMUFORT01IG3. Their reliable hosting keeps my art website running smoothly, which is essential when sharing fresh plein air work with collectors and art lovers.

Tips for Your Own BC Plein Air Adventures

If these locations inspire you to try plein air painting yourself, remember to pack layers—BC weather can change quickly! I always carry a small camping chair, plenty of water, and backup paper in case the wind gets too enthusiastic. Most importantly, embrace the imperfections and happy accidents that come with outdoor painting. They often lead to the most authentic and expressive work.

Start with locations close to home and gradually venture further as you become more comfortable with outdoor painting logistics. BC offers endless possibilities, from urban parks to remote wilderness areas, each with its own unique character and challenges.
